Help Identifying My Japanese Tea Set
Dragonware Tea sets are porcelain tea services with a oriental dragon decoration. They were decorated using Moriage, a style of porcelain decoration that lays beads of porcelain on the item prior to kiln firing, and then painting these later. This creates a raised motif on the item, in this case, a dragon.
Other design techniques include Satsuma pieces which add a Satsuma and enameled handles to the moriage dragon, a coralene design using tiny glass beads heated to look like coral, enamelled designs, and finally occasionally a flat dragon of gold or coloured paint. While this is not the typical raised dragon, it is still considered dragonware. Dragonware was manufactured as display items for the table, and can include anything from smoking sets to vases, lamps, ashtrays, plates, incense burners, and of course tea sets.

Antique Japanese teacups are beautiful examples of Asian craftsmanship. The term can refer to any teacups made in Japan until about , although anything made after would be more correctly termed vintage. Japanese teacups and other pieces were exported to Europe beginning in the s. The dynasties can be broken down into the following time periods. Teacups may be marked with Japanese characters identifying these dynasties but it is necessary to have an expert translate the markings.
While a teacup marked with the Japanese character for a dynasty can help you estimate its age, it’s also important to note the type of teacup and the patterns on the cup itself. Japanese teacups are identified more with their city of origin than with the dynasty in which they were made. Japanese teacups come in hundreds of patterns which are often identified with the city of origin rather than the pattern itself.
Moriage is a type of decoration that has been used on Japanese pottery for centuries. It is a process of delicately layering clay on pottery to create intricate, raised designs. They may then be painted in vibrant colors or have gold leaf added to them. This type of pottery is easily damaged if not handled carefully. Not all Moriage pieces are antique so always know who you are buying from and learn as much about the authentic antique pieces as you can.

During the late 19th century, techniques used by the makers and styles of oriental pottery such as Satsuma and Dragonware began to evolve and progress as the potters became more skilled and had access to better and more advanced machinery and kilns. The use of Moriage is widespread throughout the range of Japanese and Chinese pottery that has been available over the last years.
Moriage is the term used to describe the layering of small beads or lines of slip clay onto the surface of the pottery, vase or bowl which is then glazed over to leave a relief that can be felt and seen. The Moriage beads were often painted gold after the glaze had been applied, giving the pottery item a unique and special finish. The beads were all placed onto the pottery by hand before it was fired in the kiln.
Later, when the mass production of such items was started, the addition of the slip clay beads was replaced by adding small dots of enamel which speeded up the production time of each of the items. Moriage was also taken one step further and was used to create pottery vases and barrels that have heavily stylized relief designs. Pottery such as Dragonware featured this style and method heavily.
The term Dragonware is used to describe a pot or vase that has an oriental dragon motif that has been built up using fine layers of slip clay, making a deep relief of the dragon or serpent that curls around the outside of the piece of pottery. Slip clay is a thick liquid clay that is used to make porcelain and pottery. The Dragonware was then painted in bright colors with scenes or images of Japanese or Oriental life, and the dragons were usually left with a minimal or white coloring.
Although it began to be made in the late 19th century, Dragonware is still made today and is still very popular, being exported all over the world. The raised, 3 dimensional parts of the moriage and Dragonware pieces were often added to the pottery using a technique known as slipwork.

After the decoration has been applied the pieces are glazed and fired. It is of interest to note that a Yuan funerary urn decorated with underglaze blue and underglaze red and dated is still in the Chinese taste even though by this time the largescale production of blue and white porcelain in the Yuan dynasty Mongol taste had started its influence at Jingdezhen.
RetroReaction It is believed that underglaze blue and white porcelain was first made in the Tang dynasty. The blue decoration is painted onto the body of the porcelain before glazing using very finely ground cobalt oxide mixed with water. Satsuma ware continued to be massproduced through the modern period though quality declined to the point where it eventually lost interest for consumers. There was never a domestic demand for these pieces which were generally viewed as the betrayal of Japanese tradition.

Hello, I have had this tea set since I was I got it at an antique store in Michigan. The owner told me it was from Japan sometime during WW2. I’ve looked in several places on the internet for some idea of where it originated and a hint at what it might be worth. Maybe someone here can help me. This is the mark on the tea pot, the word is Manna with a long flourish at the end which almost looks like a long tailed ‘Y’, it attaches to the tip of the lantern below to look like smoke.
The word China is inside an icon of a magic lantern and underneath is written “Made in Japan”. I have searched ALL day and I have only come up with one comment on a forum which stated that Manna was a Japanese company but other than that nothing is to be found!!!
